Setting up an Aquarium
By Steve East
I rescued an aquarium from a garbage pile. It was unbelievably filthy and full of slimy grime and spider webs from lack of use. It had a crack on one side near the bottom corner. To save it, I used an outdoor hose and scratch pad to clean it out carefully. Then I dried it off, and repaired the crack with clear silicone. The base had to be reinforced with wood beams (to distribute the weight). After filling it with water, I poured in the gravel (light blue rocks). Then I placed the pump and heater and turned them on. Next, the decorations and plants were added as well as a background image for the rear glass wall. I made sure the thermostat was set for 72F, and added tap water conditioner. For two days I let everything settle, then bought the tropical fish. I bought Zebra Danios because they are very active and incredibly hardy. Then added Dwarf Gourami because they are beautiful and colorful, yet tough as nails. Truly they are really the rulers of the tank! Of course the Angel fish are the "piece de resistance." They are incredible and very bright. Apparently, I must have done something right because the tropical fish tank became a huge success story in our home. It is a conversation piece whenever we have guests. I highly recommend this as an enjoyable hobby. Go for it! |
