Child Custody, Father's Rights

By Steve East

There is something very important that I have learned in my 51 years of life: Knowledge and Information is your key to success in almost every aspect of your life!

This is the age of the Internet. A vast, unbelievably huge storehouse of ideas and practical know how. Anyone with a computer and an Internet connection has access to this awesome library of news and advice.

My topic here is Child Custody. Specifically, I wish to go over Father's rights on this very sensitive matter.

Having experienced this situation myself, it would give me a pleasure to save someone else from the pitfalls so easily fallen into.

As I mentioned above, arm yourself with up to date information.

OK, let's get right into it.

First and foremost, the absolute easiest way to solve custody issues is to find a way to reconcile. Of course, this is truly horrifying and unthinkable for most! However, if you still feel even a glimmer of hope, then please (for the sake of the child) at least make an effort to explore this scenario.

Next step: Before you get a lawyer, (and spend much more than necessary) get your head together and organize your thoughts.

Take into consideration the following:

Visitation
Try to come to an agreement without the hassle of a forced document. In most jurisdictions, a legal schedule is not necessary. This will set you free to have much more flexibility to be with your child. For both sides, there is the added convenience of freedom of choice and changing one's mind doesn't necessarily have serious consequences.

Financial
Holding off on getting lawyers involved can give you the opportunity to get your finances in order. Usually it's best to avoid the prying eyes of cold-blooded legal staff. Alimony and child support are two extremely complicated areas where you will truly require professional up to date advice.

Conclusion
In this day and age most fathers wish to have a much greater involvement in their relationship with their children. Lawyers and Judges are very aware of this, however please be careful to avoid the "money-grabbers" who will take advantage of this new reality. It is really an uphill battle for most fathers to gain full custody rights. You can be in for the battle of your life. Please protect yourself early on by arming yourself with knowledge. So many fathers end up just "paying" and not "seeing."
Many "Judges" are still old-fashioned, and somehow believe that raising a child is the "woman's" job, and "paying" is the man's job. It is a tough battle, but with the proper information it is NOT insurmountable!

Contributor's Note

I am not a lawyer, so please get legal advice before acting on any of my suggestions.
